Hi everyone.

This is a reminder regarding the Icelandic reunion in Rotorua March 2^nd and 3^rd 2012.

Michael is holding the camp for us until December 31^st, but would appreciate if you make your bookings as soon as possible. Don’t forget to state that you are a part of the Icelandic reunion at the time of your booking.

He tells me that the kitchen, shower block and the toilet block have been renovated this winter so the place should be even better than last time.

Scandinavian favorites

Happy new year everyone! hope you had a wonderful holiday celebrating with friends and family :)

I wanted to share something quite awesome in case you hadn't heard about this... There is a website based here in New Zealand selling Scndinavian favorites like Cod roe créme - or as we call it in Iceland ''Kavíar í túbu - caviar in a tube'' (I'm having some right now, on toast. It reminded me to post about the site) Yummmm!

They also have Super salty liquorice, and Tyrkisk Peber candy, Daim chocolate, and lump fish caviar among other yummy things :)

Þorrablót

Hello everyone! Just letting you know we are all still here :)

The blog has been quite dormant for a while now and we hope to change that.. These past few weeks in Christchurch have been shaky to say the least but we are all safe and well, and celebrated this weekend with the annual Þorrablót!
(if you have photos you would like to share from the evening please get in touch and we can add them to this blog)

The food was the most impressive collection of Icelandic delicacies! We had rotten skate/Skata, pickled herring two ways/síld, Rotten shark/Hákarl, Sheep heads/svið, Rye Bread/rúgbrauð, Pate/kindakæfa, potatoes in white sauce/uppstúfur, Swede mash/rófustappa, pickled red cabbage/rauðkál, crepes/pönnukökur, Icelandic donuts?/kleinur, haggis/lyfrapylsa, blood pudding/blóðmör, flatcakes?/flatkökur, double smoked leg of lamb/hangikjöt and of course plenty of Beer/mead ;) and black death/Brennivín...

The costumes were absolutely awesome and our Icelandic singing was met with a very impressive bagpipe playing scotsman! (some of us learned it's not an easy instrument to play..)

I wanted to say thank you to everyone who helped make the event happen. It was a raging success!

North Island annual reunion, a message from Sigrun Edda

Hallo everyone.

Our annual North Island reunion was held at Awakeri on March 5th to 7th 2010. Thank you, Nicola and Finnbogi, for all the great organising and effort. The dinner was brilliant, and so was the breakfast. This was much appreciated, and will be a hard act to follow!

The turn-out was much better than the two previous years, and that was great to see. A big welcome to the two new families that showed up, Hilmar, Leeanne, Runa Lind, Arana and their children.

At the meeting we decided that we would stick to being a ‘social club’ rather than a fully fledged ‘society’ , with bigger obligations and expectations than our members are keen on.

There will be no membership fees at this stage. The money in the Icelandic Society’s account will stay there for the time being.

We will not be taking part in the Scandinavian Festivals on a permanent basis, but ‘play it by ear’ each time. The next Scandinavian Festival will be in Norsewood in February 2011, and Vivien and Petur Hognason have offered to represent us there. They will no doubt give us an update on the program closer to the time, and everyone is welcome to attend.

However, this will not replace our reunion in 2011, which will be held somewhere in the ROTORUA district. The 3 Icelandic families in the area will work at finding a suitable venue, and we will let you know the details closer to the time. We will be working on having this the first weekend in March, as per tradition.

I’m trying to start up a scrap book from our reunions, and would love to be able to go back to the very first one in Waharoa in 1982. I have got a good selection of photos from 2005 and 2007, but anything else is sadly missing. Please email or post me any photos you can spare, I’m sure this exercise will be worth it in the long run.

I have updated the contact list to the best of my ability, and will email it to everyone. Please let me know if you see any mistakes, if you know of people on the list that have left the country, or if you know of anyone missing. This list just keeps on growing, but there are quite a few people there no-one has seen or heard of for years. I’m not sure what to do about that; I’m not keen on dropping anyone off just because they haven’t been in contact for a while.

I would love to see more of your news on our blogspot, that is what it is for. It doesn’t have to be of great importance to the wider world, just a bit of fun for us here in NZ.

You are kindly invited to join us for our 1st Open Day show-casing Icelandic horses on Sunday, February 28, from 11.00 am to 4.00 pm. The Open Day will take place at Neđri Bakki Icelandic Horses Stud, 20B Ostrich Farm Road, Pukekohe. It is organized and hosted by the two leading studs on the North Island: Neđri Bakki and Skógarrönd. Come along and find out why the Icelandic horse has become one of the most popular horses for adult riding in much of Europe! They are extremely good natured, versatile and enthusiastic.

"They have charm, strength and courage, are intelligent and love being trained. The Icelandic horse has five gaits. Among the usual gaits - walk, trot and canter - the Icelandic horse also has the magical tölt, a remarkably smooth four-beat running walk.
No other breed can manage this gait as naturally and beautifully as the Icelandic horse. Pace is the fifth gait but not found in all Icelandic horses. Most Icelandic horses today are between 13hh and 14hh. They are extremely strong and are expected to carry any adult, no matter how tall and heavy. The Icelandic horse can be found in over 40 different colours, with hundreds of colour combinations."

At the Open Day we will:

. Demonstrate the horses in two mini-shows at 12 pm and 2 pm.

. Show the mares and their new foals, born over the last two months.

. Exhibit saddles and other equipment for Icelandic horses, books and training material, information on the NZ Icelandic Horse Breeders and Riders Association.

. Be happy to talk about the horses and answer any questions you might have.

. Arrange a cake stall with coffee, tea, soft drinks, and sausages to purchase on site.

There will be plenty of parking spaces at the property. Follow the signs and you will be directed to the front paddock to park.

Bring along your family and friends for few relaxing hours.

Once again we need to start thinking about next years Icelandic reunion.

We have decided to have it at Awakeri Hot Springs close to Whakatane. I have attached some information about Awakeri Hot Springs, but you can look on their website

There is a fantastic book "The Icelandic Horse", for sale via www.lifland.is Of course it is about the history of the Icelandic horse, but there is a lot general history mentioned as well with heaps of (historic) beautiful pics. I have bought the book and it is also a great read.

The other thing is we are planning to organise a trip to Iceland in 2010 with visits to breeders, trainers, Hólar University (attending a riding course) a horse tour and some sightseeing. If you wish I can keep you updated on this.

Christchurch meet-up this Thursday

Good Afternoon,

A couple of weeks ago we gave a demo with two of our Icelandic Horses on the Scandinavian festival in Auckland, together with Kenneth Husted and his horses.

Over there we met some members of the New Zealand Icelandic Society and received a card from your Society with your contact details. Some of the members were really happily surprised to meet the horses from their home country Down Under!

We are owning and breeding Icelandic Horses in New Zealand since 2003. That year we emigrated from the Netherlands to New Zealand and since we are pasionate about the Icelandic Horse, there was no doubt about bringing with us two of our younger horses. We are owning and breeding Icelandics already since 1984.

Two years ago we imported our Iceland born and bred mare through Denmark and last year our first foal to our young stallion was born; Áki frá Skógarrönd.

Every other month I send around a Newsletter to people interested/owning an Icelandic Horse in New Zealand and Australia (see underneath), with information on Icelandic Horses around the world.

Next year we try to organise a tour to Iceland with a riding course at Hólar University.

If you are interested in receiving our Newsletters, please let us know.

If you organise an activity where the horses would fit in, we are happy to discuss the posibilities with you for giving a demo.

Scandinavian Festival

Have you registered for the Scandinavian festival yet?

There is still time! We are hoping to see as many of our regulars as possible, and would love to meet up with with any newcomers too.

Our AGM will be held on Friday night, March27th, somewhere at the Parklane hotel. At this stage we hope to tie the meeting in with pre-dinner drinks and a dinner or takeaways.
I plan to put up a notice in the hotel foyer, and at our stand at the racecourse as well.

If you are not going to be present, but have items you wish to have discussed at the AGM, feel free to forward them to me or Viv.

Spring in New Zealand.. and Recipes..

Happy Spring! This is just a quick post to remind us all that this website is here ;) And to let you know we'd love to hear from you.. Do send us your pictures and/or stories.

We have just returned to New Zealand after ten weeks in Iceland, where we experienced the hottest summer ever recorded! hoping for a hot one here in New Zealand as well...

I also wanted to let you know that if there is anything in particular that you are missing.. we have found many substitutes for the Icelandic foods here and are happy to share them with you.. for example a recipe for Remolaði/Remoulade and the closest we've found to 'Pylsu sinnep' is 'fine wholegrain mustard' also recipes for making Graflax and Graflaxssósa.. And as of quite recently, we can now get strong salty hard candy /sterkur brjóstsykur from pack'n'save! -And if you visit any asian food warehouse, they will have fried onion/steiktur laukur which is pretty much exactly the same as in Iceland (and to think, for so many years we had packets sent over in the post..)

Do send requests if there's anything you're looking for.. We recently had great success making Asíur/pickled cucumber and Rauðkál/pickled red cabbage..

But now I have a request for you.. does anyone know how to bake flatkökur/flatbread ?
We have tried a few times but never got it quite right, it becomes a sort of sticky-smoky-mess with the oats and water.. any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Til hamingju með 17 Júní!

Kæru Íslendingar til hamingju með afmæli lýðveldisins. Þótt höf og álfur skilji að okkur íslendingana sem búum á Nýja Sjálandi þá er sálin svo sannarlega alltaf heima á Fróni á þessum merkis degi.

Oft höfum við Íslendingarnir hérna á suðureyju fagnað þessum degi saman, ekkert formlega heldur bara hist og borðað kjarngóðan íslenskan mat, en þetta árið eru svo margir frá Suðureyju í Víking að ekkert hefur orðið af neinni samkomu. Þá spilar líka inn í að þennan dag ber upp á þriðjudegi. En við fjölskildan erum í hátíðarstemningu og ætlum að borða lambalæri með brúnuðum kartöflum og rauðkáli í kvöld Við höfum líka fengið þetta ekta 17 júní veður í dag, smá riggningarsudda og það skemmir nú ekki.

Ég hef fengið fyrirspurnir varðandi þorrablótin okkar hér fyrir sunnan en þau hafa bara orðið til þegar einhver framtakssamur skipuleggur þau og svo skiptir fólk með sér verkum varðandi að útvega og vinna matföng , en næst þegar að það gerist er upplagt að vera í sambandi á þessari síðu, því kanski vilja fleiri taka þátt. En kæru landar, endilega reynum að vera í góðu sambandi.

Hi everyone.

I think Hera has done very well setting up this blogspot for us, many thanks for all the work!
Anyway, my name is Sigun Edda Crowe, and I’m the president of the Icelandic Society here in the North Island. It has been going for 21 years now, I believe we had our first proper meeting in Taupo in 1987.

The Icelanders here in the North Island live all over the place, and we make a point of getting together once a year, usually the first weekend in March.
We take turns at organising the reunions, and they have been held in many places, and mostly in motor camps. These reunions are mostly for family fun, and apart from all the catching up and talking, we make a point of having a soccer game on the Saturday, and then a combined barbecue on the Saturday night.
Everyone is welcome, just watch this blogspot, or, if you are on the address list you will be contacted directly by who ever is doing the organising. If you are not on the contact list, feel free to get in touch with me and I will add your name to it.

Our next reunion will be held in Auckland, the last weekend in March 2009. We are going to join in with the biannual Scandinavian meeting, for the very first time.
These Scandinavian meetings have been going for a long time, as the Danes, Norwegians, Finns and the Swedes have a lot longer immigration history here than us.
There are mixed feelings among our members regarding this. We have been invited to join in the past, but have resisted on the grounds that we are so few, and we feared we would simply get lost in the crowd.
However, we have now elected to give this a go as a one-off, and see if it suits us. Thorbergur, Siggi and Ingi in Auckland have been representing the Icelandic Society on the planning committee, and I’m sure they will keep us informed. Thorbergur is also looking at suitable accommodation so that we can all stay together, and probably have our very own party/reunion on the Friday night.

There are considerable costs involved in being a part of this Scandinavian meeting, which is a bit of a bummer ! We have never had any membership fees, and therefore no money in the kitty. This is the reason we elected to instigate our $50 annual membership fee, to kick-start a fund.

I can understand that the Icelanders in the South Island feel this Auckland meeting has no benefits for them, but bear in mind that if we decide to continue to be a part of the Scandinavian Club, future meetings will also be held in the South Island.

The other project in hand is a donation of a ribbon from the NZ Icelandic Society to the Mooring Stone in Parliament. The approx cost of this ribbon is $200.

I’m asking those who are not willing to share in the cost of the involvement with the Scandinavian meeting in 2009, to at least contribute $20 towards the ribbon.

Jæja hingað er nú komin ný síða. Þeir sem vilja geta óskað eftir aðgangi, og þá komist inn til að setja inn fréttir og fleira.
Annars er hægt að kommenta/setja inn athugasemdir. Endilega hafið samband og sendið linkana ykkar ef þið viljið vera skráð hér til hliðar svo við getum verið í sambandi.

Ég heiti Emma, (Dagný Emma) og er Formaður íslendingafélagsins á suður eyjunni, en eins og þið vitið þá er sú netslóð dottin niður, einnig er lítið að gerast á iceland.net.nz síðunni þar sem hann Baddi setti hana upp og síðan hefur enginn getað tekið við.

Við töldum þessa síðu vænan kost, enda er hún ókeypis og auðveldara fyrir fleiri að fá aðgang að henni.

Sigún Edda hefur staðið sig mjög vel sem formaður íslendingafélagsins á norður eyjunni, og tekið saman fínan nafnalista (sem væri mjög gott að hafa hérna inni)
Ekki er mikill áhugi fyrir að greiða félagsgjöld, enda skiljanlegt þar sem meirihlutinn af hópnum hér á suður eyjunni er hér aðeins tímabundið (í námi eða að afla sér starfsreynslu) Og okkur finnst betra að hafa það þannig, og frekar að taka þátt ef einhverjar athafnir eiga sér stað sem við tökum þátt í, eða eitthvað annað sérstakt...

Ég vil sérstaklega hrósa þeim sem hafa staðið að undanförnum þorrablótum, og set hérna inn eina mynd frá því síðasta..

Enn og aftur hvet ég ykkur til að kommenta, sérstaklega hér í byrjun (svo við fáum tölu á okkur) og að setja linkana ykkar með
(svo auðvitað ef þið viljið óska eftir aðgangi)

Frá mínum bæjardyrum séð, finnst mér mjög mikilvægt að taka vel á móti Íslendingum sem eru að byrja nýtt líf hér á Nýjasjálandi - hvort sem það er stutt eða langtíma stopp.

The Scandinavian Festival incorporating The Scandinavian Gathering

What is the Scandinavian Festival about?
We gather to celebrate our Scandinavian roots and links with the life and culture of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Swedenand to honour the early pioneers that settled in New Zealand.

Where is it?

At Alexandra Park Function Centre where there is room for hundreds of people of all ages to meet and enjoy Scandinavian culture, and space for cultural displays, craft stalls, and trade exhibits. There is even a sport field and plenty of car parking.

The Programme will include the traditions from past Gatherings: Opening and closing Ceremonies, Dinner on Saturday night with entertainment, Church Service and more Festival activities.

We will also put a focus on family friendly activities, a programme for children, workshops and seminars on current, cultural and historic interests relating to Scandinavia and sports- perhaps games and soccer match.

Your contribution is needed and wanted…

This weekend belongs to all with Scandinavian ancestry and your input is needed.

Please register your intention to come to the Festival. Please also let us know about any ideas you have as to what kind of seminars/workshops you would like to attend.

Would you be willing to run a seminar? Organise a game e.g. Finnish long ball or soccer? Have you information for a cultural or poster display e.g. a family tree or information about Sweden/Iceland, Denmark etc or your Scandinavian club? Do you wish to display and or sell Scandinavian crafts or products?
